CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP ON SOLID MINERAL GOVERNANCE AND HOST COMMUNITY RIGHTS FOR CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS 2015:
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
The Nigerian extractive industry has had a chequered history of corruption, mismanagement, insecurity, human rights abuses and environmental degradation, all of which impact on extractive host communities. While there have been a lot of public conversations about the hydrocarbon sector, the solid mineral sector, for various reasons has not received as much attention, while their host communities also bear the brunt of these negative impacts.
One of the factors that perpetuate the issues confronting mining host communities in Nigeria is their limited understanding of the governance framework for solid minerals and host community rights. Global Rights’ intention therefore is to build the capacity of civil society organizations which serve these communities by bridging their knowledge gap to enhance their ability to effectively contribute to a more transparent, participatory and accountable solid mineral governance structure in Nigeria. This in turn will ensure the development of the sector and promote sustainable extractive industries founded on good governance and the respect for host community rights.
This workshop therefore intends to build the understanding and capacity of civil society organizations on solid mineral governance and host community rights in Nigeria, with the overarching aim of facilitating their ability to constructively engage stakeholders in the mining industry at both state and national levels on issues which challenge mining host community rights. It also aims to enhance their ability to take on resource governance projects; and organize mining host communities around campaign issues to create broad-based constituencies able to initiate positive change.
The workshop will incorporate interactive sessions, documentaries, role plays and active learning modules on human rights, social and environmental impact assessments, as well as the institutions, laws and regulations governing solid mineral mining in Nigeria.
At the end of the workshop, three participating civil society organizations will be selected and supported by Global Rights to implement advocacy campaigns engaging government and/or extractive companies on issues pertaining to governance of solid minerals and host community rights.
